The Problem Finders

Project-based learning has been let down in too many instances with “fake”, academic, theoretical problems that need solving. The learning processes involved are at best fuzzy for most educators: what is “collaboration”, “student-designed” and “student-led” learning?

NEW and IMPROVED session for BLC13

  • Learn from the creative practices of some of the best media and tech companies in the world.
  • Find out what the independent and collaborative learning skills and processes these growing creative industries, and other business, require.
  • Hear inspiring mini-talks, stories from schools around the world and participate in a series of highly engaging discussions and exercises.

Re-designing Assessment

Unpacking the broad assessment agenda we face in schools today and exploring new insights and solutions for the challenges we face.

Let’s face it, the assessment agenda is fraught with mixed metaphors, blind alleys and confusing vocabulary! We need to get to grips with this powerful part of learning. We need to put assessment back on to our own daily agenda and not just for a grade at the end of the course. Let’s re-establish assessment in it’s rightful place as an integral part of any learning.

  • It is all about the grade at the end of the day. How can I break this everlasting cycle?
  • I want my students to be more central in their learning, how do I take steps towards this?
  • I think I am doing OK with assessment in my classroom, but how does this compare with elsewhere in the world? Do others face the same challenge?

Using cameras to Paint with Light and Improve writing

Bring your digital camera, a small flashlight (and tripod if possible), and join us on a walking tour of downtown Boston to explore night photography. Learn how to control light and use flashlights to paint with light and create imaginative images as a starting point for creative and point of view writing. If you have a camera with some manual settings bring it, but if you don’t we will use what ever camera you have or you can download the Slow Shutter iPhone app.

Engage students to paint their city, home and themselves in a different light using photography. We will investigate how we frame our photos (what we focus on, what we edit out) as a starting point for reflective practice, for writing, art and critical thinking in the classroom. Use photography to ignite imagination and create highly dramatic photos to render the familiar a little strange. Use these photos as a starting point for points of viewing writing.

This is a sample book that we created with our students on paint with light:

Creative and Critical Thinking: Creating Space for Innovation

Whether you're an innovator who’s seeking to break a new idea to colleagues and community, or a leader trying to manage the expectations of an engaged active team, finding space to innovate is tough. Leaders face the challenge of managing priorities and planning in advance for the unplannable innovations that might come around the corner. Innovators face the hurdle of seeing their initial ideas grow, become accepted and flourish into a widely adopted way of thinking, working or learning.

Our expertise grows from nearly a decade working in technology, fashion, TV and film media, leading projects to be on budget, on time and on top of the competition, coupled with a background in classroom, government advisory and technology leadership roles.

We will bring both these worlds together to help provoke your own team's response to managing creativity and creating space for more innovation in your schools and your education department. We will share compelling stories, discuss the learning from these, and introduce your team to tools for reuse in your innovation strategy.

Technology in the Primary Classroom--Oh, the Possibilities!

The benefit of having technology in our classroom is not that we can do things better, but that it allows us to do things that were formerly impossible! Technology allows primary students to create in new ways, to connect with people and classrooms outside of their building and to share their work with the world. We’ll explore new tools, student examples, and classroom management techniques that will help make this shift possible in your classroom of little learners.

We’ll investigate

  • How to keep our young learners safe online
  • Blogging tools that are appropriate for this age level
  • How to leverage Skype in your classroom
  • Classroom Twitter accounts--why would you want one?
  • How you can begin to connect your classroom with the world

Classroom Activities Go Global: Blending Everyday Teaching and Learning with Virtual Cross-cultural Collaboration Activities

The advancement of technologies has made it common to share our daily life and work together with others across the globe. Such an interconnected society requires schools to prepare our kids to be competent in cross-cultural communications and global working environments.

Then, what should the school activities look like?  Should we design additional curricula focusing on global issues and or cultural information? What are the effective ways to transform teaching and learning methods to fulfill the requirement?

In exploring the answers through this session, participants will:

  • Understand how regular classroom activities could be blended with cross-culturally situated virtual learning environments.
  • Be introduced to one of the best practices in transforming local school curricula to be interculturally rich and globally collaborative.
  • Ascertain the roles of class teachers, resource teachers, administrators and district offices in internationalizing school activities.
  • Discover the implications for adopting Common Core curriculum and assessment.

Crowdsourcing edu content Ideas for activating your network to not only connect but to create

A hugely popular session at BLC12 this session will get you busy building and sharing your expertise! Professional networks are brimming with resources and links and it sometimes feels like too much. One of the best ways to narrow the focus is to crowdsource specific content. Networks should not simply be about connecting with fellow educators, we need to activate the huge potential they have and create together.

Learn alongside Tom Barrett who has been spending the last 5 years crowdsourcing resources that support teacher’s professional development as well as inspire engaging learning in the classroom!

- How can I make crowdsourcing a part of how I design materials for teachers and students?
- How do I engage all of my staff to be able to engage in creating resources together?
- How can I filter the vast amount of resources that I see everyday in my online networks? How do I make the most of the resources available?
- What tools can I use to help create resources with other teachers in my district?

Attendees will

- understand how a network can be a powerful tool for co-creation and not just connections;
- reflect on their own creative practices and how crowdsourcing might fit in;
- see real world examples of how crowdsourcing innovations are being applied in sectors beyond the education sector;
- see a range of examples of successfully crowdsourced resources for education.
- take away a range of tools and models to crowdsource unique resources for your classes and schools;
- see crowdsourcing in action

Creativity and Academic Excellence

Creativity is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration' - Thomas Edison.

The path to the creative society of the future goes straight through the classroom. When students have been taught the essential skills and knowledge of each subject they develop a deeper understanding of the material and are able to go beyond existing knowledge and transfer this knowledge to new situations. All of the research demonstrates that creativity only happens with sustained hard work, skill, and the confidence needed to take risks. According to Collard, ‘Creative skills aren't just about good ideas, they are about having the skills to make good ideas happen.’

We need to prepare our students to excel in examinations so that they can access the career paths they have chosen, but we also need to ensure that our students are to be able to enter the world as confident, creative individuals who can deal with the diverse and challenging problems they will encounter. Our students will have to master disciplinary knowledge and expertise to do well in tests, but if they are to flourish in the world, they must learn to uncover the learning, and understand how everything connects together, and how to link knowledge across disciplines. When we enable our students to achieve this their creativity will be unleashed.

This workshop will explore practical ways to unleash creativity in your students and enable them to flourish academically. A plethora of strategies, ideas and resources will be shared.

BYOB (Build Your Own Blend): Tinkering with Time, Place, Path & Pace for Student-Owned Learning

The Innosight Institute (2012) defines blended learning as: “a formal education program in which a student learns at least in part through online delivery of content and instruction with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace...”  Given that blended learning is NOT about putting content online and hoping students will take it from there... How might we leverage digital tools, environments and processes to give students more control over time, place, path and/or pace, even within a traditional school schedule? How might we most effectively combine face-to-face and online experiences to engage learners and extend their thinking beyond traditional boundaries?

Attendees will consider elements critical to the design of successful “BYOB” learning opportunities, including:

  • Thoughtful selection of resources and processes to support student workflow, productivity and self-direction
  • Meaningful integration of online and face-to-face experiences to reframe time, place, path and/or pace of learning
  • Strategies for pushing past the novelty of digital tools and environments to leverage the affordances of each

In January of this year, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Paul Salopek began a seven-year walk around the world. Called "Out of Eden," the walk will retrace the path of human migration out of the Rift Valley of Africa, eastward through Asia, across the Bering Strait by boat, and down through the Americas to finish in Patagonia. He will be examining the great stories of our day – ethnic migrations, climate change, resource shortages, regional conflicts – as a walking global correspondent for National Geographic. The Pulitzer Center will be heading up the educational component of the walk, facilitating interaction between Salopek and your students along the way through e-mail Q and As, Skype talks, and other methods. Common Core: Rethink Research and Engage Students

Research isn’t a solitary task confined to a library. Research happens every time we
grab our cell phones to answer a question or search for something. Despite being hyper connected to information, students need to learn how to find, evaluate and use that information in a variety of contexts. Explore how Instagram scavenger hunts, infographics
and expert group investigations can be used to get students researching to address the Common Core Standards.

Participants will:

Discuss the changing role of research in our lives.
Crowdsource ideas for using Instagram to teach informal research.
Explore how infographics combine research and digital media.
Brainstorm benefits of allowing students to become the “experts” and teach each other.

Small Shifts, Big Impact: Closing the Gap to Empowered Learning

How large is the gap that truly exists between the real and ideal for learners? Are there ways to “tweak” (small shift) instruction that will enlist students as deep questioners, critical thinkers and effective problem-solvers (big impact)? What if we created a “Destination Postcard” of the ideal learner, and designed learning experiences from there? Join this Switch-inspired think-tank on lesson design and implementation strategies that empower students to think and act their way to the acquisition and connection of content while developing enduring learning dispositions. (Common Core Compatible)

Attendees will engage in discussion and consider activities designed to help educators:

  • Consider content acquisition as a vehicle for learning (means not end).
  • Develop learner-driven ways to leverage digital tools, environments and processes.
  • Apply concepts from Switch (Chip & Dan Heath) to identify “small shift / big impact” possibilities in lesson (re)design.

Students as Tech Support

Very few schools have the amount of technical support that they need and one of the most overlooked technical resources schools have is their students! If you have staff who are reluctant with technology, having students work as in class liaisons is a great way to bring the teacher along while empowering the kids. The student learns by teaching and the teacher learns by listening. In this session, we will cover a variety of examples of how this is accomplished where the students, staff and school all benefit.

Our young people LOVE the chance to create, connect and collaborate through different online tools. There are so many possibilities and ways to integrate these tools into the curriculum. This presentation will explore a variety of Web 2.0 tools and how they can be used to enhance the different strands within literacy: listening, reading, speaking, vocabulary, storytelling, writing, spelling, and poetry.
Shannon McClintock Miller will highlight several different Web 2.0 tools and provide examples of how they can be used in each of these strands.

Global Goods, Local Costs: Where Did All My Stuff Come From?

Our students know a lot about the things they wear, eat and use every day. After all, who pays more attention to the price and characteristics of a new iPod, outfit or shrimp dinner than a teenager? But in our globalized world, many of the basic resources that compose these goods are extracted, refined and processed far away under obscure systems that mask some hard truths. Using vivid reporting by Pulitzer Center journalists, we will explore the untold process that links shrimp, oil, chocolate, gold and other extracted resources to the products we buy at our local stores. You will learn how you can use Pulitzer Center reporting and educational materials to engage your students on these issues, weaving together themes of environmental awareness, workers' rights, human rights, national borders, ethnic migrations, urbanization and government and corporate transparency.

Rethinking Professional Development

It’s not the gadgets, tools and wires that will change the culture of learning. It’s how you create a vision that withstands the rush of new tools, and how you use them for collaboration, communication and critical thinking that will radically change the teaching and learning process. New technology does not change teaching and learning practices, not without a clear vision and innovative practices to engage students in becoming more self directed problem finders.
How can we make use of these tools to expand learning and foster critical thought? What programmatic trends distinguish schools on the leading edge of using technology for global education? How can a school’s professional development program help teachers embrace these opportunities? What technologies are educators talking about? How can administrators become more aware of tools like Twitter so they can make informed decisions about policy? What are ways administrators can help model implementation of technology? Come to this forum and be prepared to share your experiences and explore your questions to help envision the future of your school, implementation of 1:1

This session is strictly about educational philosophy. We will walk you through our educational beliefs our creative process. Experience the “down and dirty” truth behind our collaboration. Our goal is that crowd participation and insightful questions will drive this presentation and create conversation that touches at the heart of teaching.
1. Constructivism
-What does it mean?
-Its place in a classroom
2. Collaborative Process
-Tools
-Re-imagine, Refine, redesign
-Implementation
-Reflection
3. Motivation

4. Mastery
-From content to culture
-Using content to teach mastery of skills to empower learning, not knowledge

What's All This Change About In The Library?
Not a day goes by in the library at Van Meter that there isn't a change....within the world of libraries and librarianship. The role of the teacher librarian.....schedule, connector, collaborator, responsibilities, technology integration specialist, social media guru....so much changes all of the time. The library itself changes....physical spaces, collections are changing and becoming more digital with eBooks and other online resources, the library is no longer left inside of four walls, the materials in the library are changing, and much more.

Twitter as a Class Building Tool
Twitter is an exceptionally powerful--and seriously underused--capture tool. The platform is ideal for snaring dialogue--whether in a film or presentation, a meeting or class discussion. Conversations normally lost are easily recorded and archived for future use. Even notes on a whiteboard or personal notepad can be photographed and posted on Twitter. My senior students and I have been using Twitter to host our classroom, capturing our conversations in and out of class with people around the world, since October 2012. To date, we’ve amassing more than 11,000 tweets, all of them automatically archived in a Google spreadsheet and later mined, manipulated and visualized using google scripts. Participants will leave this session knowing:how to use hashtags to define the class "space" and themes, best practices for collaborative note-taking, how to automatically archive tweets and set up a Twitter visualization using Google scripting, how to use web tools to organize and archive collections of tweets around discussions and some legal considerations.

Telling Photo Tales

Over 80% of our brains are used interpreting visuals. It seems a waste not to take advantage this powerful channel into the minds of our students. What sorts of ways can a single image be used to tell stories and explore complex ideas in Math, Science, Language Arts or Languages classroom? What could we do with a series of pictures? How can we do this beyond the time and space of the classroom walls and have our students generate a bank of powerful visuals to inspire future students to create even more powerful learning imagery? What’s the best way to get stuff off the kids mobile devices and shared publically so our students learn while making a contribution to the global knowledge commons? We’ll touch on how all this feeds the essential 21st Century skills of Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Global Citizenship.

Bring your camera enabled mobile device. We’re gonna use it. And show you how to take better pictures in the process.

Creativity and Academic Excellence

'Creativity is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration' - Thomas Edison.

The Precision Teaching Initiative has been designed to improve understanding of effective teaching and learning in order to support teachers in continually tailoring educational opportunities to each student’s level of need and ability. Inspired by the work of Prof. Eric Mazur, Precision Teaching is the perfect partner to the flipped classroom; taking flip data collected from students prior to the lesson and then using classroom technologies, including 1:1 and BYO devices and high quality questioning, to collect on-demand, actionable student data within the lesson, in order to inform what happens next.

This hands-on workshop will share examples of how teachers in Australia have been using essential student in-class data to constantly reflect upon and inform their own practice. Participants will be introduced to some simple strategies that have been shown to offer unique visibility on learning, whilst supporting high quality learning conversations, meaningful collaboration and measurably higher levels of understanding.

The Future School
The more I work with technology the less it has to do with anything technological. Future schools will engage in conversations around these seven key cultural changes. This session on change management discusses how to make these possible.
• Trust – We thought it fair to say schools generally run with a top-down control/dependency management model. They need to shift to a trust/capacity model. The pace and pressure of change is now too great to be centrally managed. A high degree of faculty autonomy and capacity means more power in the system overall.
• Transparency – Transparency yields accountability and accountability creates trust. This applies to all stakeholders–students, families, faculty and administration. Opaque systems, characterized by elaborate (read costly in administrative time and money) policies and controls working in place of trust, are stiff.
• Time for Collaboration – This is where faculty and administration develop capacity for themselves as individuals and collectively as a school. This needs to be a significant amount of time–a few hours a week at least.
• A User-Driven Experience – In some sense we’ve treated students as the objects of teaching: We say “We teach students,” for example, and that leads to a passive engagement from students. And we’ve asked students (and teachers) to adapt to a set of entirely artificial constraints–the school calendar and bell schedule, for example. Innovative schools will flip that around and adapt themselves to their users needs. The consumer-driven BYOD movement is just the beginning of this change.
• Maker Culture – “Our whole theory of education,” Henry Miller famously lamented, “is based on the absurd notion that we must learn to swim on land before tackling the water.” Innovative schools will embrace the Maker movement, explicitly or implicitly, which taps our human need to make and do meaningful work.
• Hyperlocal Decision-making – One size does not fit all in education and what works in one school may not work in another. There is a huge difference between an inner city public school on a lunch program and an Ivy League prep school. There is good research showing the best schools are the ones most responsive to their immediate communities, not to some central authority.

A Walk Around the World

We will share some exciting ways teachers have already begun to use the walk as an interactive learning tool and will show you how to get involved in this unique project. Come walk with Paul!

Building a Student Learning Network (SLN): Collaborating, Comprehending and Connecting in a Digital World.

The research on comprehension instruction indicates that active readers who think as they read
use a variety of strategies-they ask questions, determine importance, synthesize information
and connect what they are learning to what they already know. These same strategies are
essential for students to turn information into knowledge when using technology. Designed for
educators who desire to move beyond device specific or single-purpose, skill-focused apps, this
session will focus on how a limited number of tools can transform learning as students become
inspired by audience and authentic feedback, connect with classrooms and experts around the
globe, and create projects previously unimaginable. The session will:
 marry best practice instructional strategies with current digital tools and practices
 address social media, digital publishing, student creation, reflection and cross-grade,
cross-school, cross-global collaboration
 offer specifics in supporting students to read with a critical eye and a skeptical stance as
they navigate and evaluate digitalsources
 provide a variety of ways to help their students engage in research and investigation
that spark local, as well as global learning, right from their own classrooms

From 1:1 to 1:World

Imagine the difference between the vision of 1:1 compared to 1:World.  The real revolution is not that every student has a digital device.    The real revolution is access to massive amounts of information and people (teamwork) around the world.   In 1:World thinking the emphasis on staff development shifts from technical training to the classroom management skills of a globally connected classroom.

How do teachers manage their own continuous improvement?

How do we build powerful communities of educators who are sharing best practices?

How do we empower students to manage unlimited and constantly exploding sources of (very good and very bad) information?

How do we teach students to connect globally for a wide range of collaborative work?

How do we balance the political expectations of standard assessments with the opportunity to be innovative and creative?

How do we engage the whole family in the education process?

While a one word change does not guarantee improvement, it can give your school community a clear vision of where we are headed.

Models and Probes: Getting Ready for the Common Core

The Innovative Technology in Science Inquiry (ITSI) project prepares diverse students for careers in information technologies by engaging them in exciting, inquiry-based science projects that use computational models and real-time data acquisition. ITSI has produced dozens of activities in elementary, middle and high school science using a range of commercial sensors as well as open source or research-based models.

Teachers can customize ITSI science inquiry activities easily to fit their classrooms and engage their local communities using the web-based interface. All activities are embedded in software that allows students to read the activity, answer questions, make predictions and collect data, analyze results, run a computer-based model, take and annotate snapshots of that model, and save their work within one application. It also allows the collection of formative and summative assessment data, which is available to the teachers.
This workshop will allow you to try out the activities and see how they would fit in your school. Project materials are free and available online.

Storyfinding

In a word or two you remember the whole story: glass slipper, sour grapes, cold porridge. You remember more than the facts (a step mother & two step sisters, an absent father, a godmother) you remember the relationships and deeper connections between the characters (nasty step mom & sisters, warm but lonely friendships with the animals in the house, a dream of a better life).

The challenge for teachers and students is not to find problems but to find stories. Powerful narratives, in a word or two, bring to mind a wealth of ideas and relationships; more than just facts. How can we find the stories that make our teaching sticky? How do we help kids find, and more importantly tell, the stories that make their learning sticky?

We’ll look at some strong examples and send you on your way with a toolkit of ideas and practices to make teaching & learning sticky in your class.

What makes learning great? A journey through provocative learning and planning student-owned curriculum topics

Of all the creative industries, the ad industry is probably the best known for its use of provocation to stick ideas in our minds and compel us into action. What would happen if we harnessed provocation for learning? Well, it's actually part of what we know makes learning great already, one of the core ingredients to make the difference between students being taught science or learning how to be scientists, being taught about language or being taught to become writers.
At the end of this session, participants will: - have an understanding of why provocation is a core part of both creative and critical thinking - see how the planning of student-owned learning depends upon strong, provocative exploratory topics - learn about different approaches to planning topics that tightly map curriculum but which offer freedom of choice in the students' learning journey.

In this presentation we will focus on how we built a 21st century learning environment between two school districts via a living digital textbook. We will explain how to collaborate on a common curriculum that engages and empowers students to collaborate, communicate and disseminate their story of world history using Skype, GoogleDocs and Wikispaces. Our students’ efforts over the past seven years have resulted in the creation of a digital textbook; several years before Apple’s iAuthor. Engaged with curriculum, motivated by a desire to understand the world in which they live and leaving digital footprints worth following.

Building Reading Communities using Subtext
In this "Hands On Session" participants will learn how it is possible, in a closed classroom community, to share margin notes, highlight, summarize, and assess in Subtext, a collaborative, social, reading app. Participants will learn how to create closed groups and share both fiction and non-fiction readings with their students. Participants will be able to find text resources, both free and paid, as well as convert any web content and make it available in Subtext. This session will review how Subtext can help assess the standards of the Common Core as well as help participants create assessments, add web links to notes, and monitor student progress while students are reading. Participants will see how it is possible to have a safe, social reading experience where students interact with each other as well as the teacher about their assigned readings in a connected way.

At the Core of Research: Reflective Note-Taking Strategies for Grades 3-5 Using Various Tools(CC)

Claim and evidence are the two key ingredients for research at the upper elementary level. The Common Core Writing Standards require these students to move beyond summarizing information to analyzing and reflecting on evidence to support a claim. In this session, we’ll take a look at strategies for reflective note-taking that engage students in the metacognitive process needed to analyze and synthesize information from a variety of sources.

Flip with Precision: If the first step of the journey is the Flip, the second has to be Precision.

Common Core: Flip Instruction and Create a Student-Centered Classroom

“Bueller?
Bueller? Bueller?” Lecture alone is ineffective whether it is live or online. So, the challenge with the flipped classroom model is to engage students around the content in a dynamic way. Then class time can be used to create learning communities where students
communicate, collaborate and create! Given the myriad tools at our fingertips, this is becoming easier to do!

Participants
will:

Discuss strategies for flipping and engaging students online.
Explore online resources that can be used to flip instruction (i.e. TED-Ed, virtual field trips, etc.)
Crowdsource favorite websites for media, resources, and information.
Brainstorm ideas for extending learning in class with student-centered activities.

How an actual revolution led to the creation of a democratic learning tool
Yahki founders, American-Egyptian architect and designer, Ashraf Tawakkol, and Australian global education entrepreneur, Mark Lamont, share a unique story of how social media R&D in the context of overseas democratic uprisings and the confluence of social media led to the development of Yahki -  a toolset that now offers breath-taking ‘learner democracy and liberation’. The R&D focused on content curation, mash up, and sharing in the public domain, not just at school, leading to the invention of the ‘education channel’. The channel enables everyone to move seamlessly between their public and school social media worlds. The outcomes and new opportunities for learners, teachers, parents and schools are amazing, for the 1st5days and beyond. This is a ‘world first’ not to be missed.”
